Giclée Print Works

CutFoldTangram, 2006

In the process of drawing and cutting out shapes in newsprint paper to use as a template for mat board to be inked and printed with, I began to play with the negative spaces left in the newsprint by folding and refolding the newsprint sheets, then scanning them as source material for making digital collage. This work was made at the 2006 Summer Print Workshop at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University with Professor William Contino.

Cut and Fold Box, 2006

The work involves the construction of a thin plywood box with mitered edges cut quickly with a Japanese dovetail saw, and a wood veneer box template laid out and cut with ruler, pencil and mat knife. Both boxes are open, having five sides with no cover or lid. The pieces were laid flat on a scanner bed and were cut and lifted or folded subsequently with image editing software. The scanner bed itself was included in the print work, as artifacts of the machine were recorded in the scanning process.

Collage from Painting Still-Life, 2005

This collage series of six prints is a collaboration with painter Joe Radoccia. Prior to the prevalence of smartphones, Joe, using a digital point-and-shoot camera, emailed me one image of his studio a day while painting a still life of potatoes. He framed images that mostly excluded the still-life objects themselves and included no images of the painting or parts thereof. Together with an image a day that I took of my studio, I arranged sections of both spaces into a digital collage. All works are printed on Arches Infinity, textured finish, 22" × 30" paper, with a full bleed on a ColorSpan Giclée Printmaker FA drum proofing printer by the artist.

Wall Around Variations, 2004

The source material consists of walls photographed with a point-and-shoot digital camera. These images often include an adjacent wall or ceiling. The paint-stippled surface of the walls sometimes became the texture of the plane in the print. The camera images were left unedited, so that the construction of the print works was based on scaling, locating, and layering the source camera images with their inherent white balances and resolutions.

Other Rooms, 2004

The work involves taking photos of interior architecture with only natural light coming into a room from windows and doors, to be used as source material for digitally collaging new imaginary, daydreamed spaces where the light of day falls at different times on adjacent walls. This work, along with Wall Around Variations and time-based projections, formed the basis of my graduate thesis show at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University.
